Entrevista com Warrel Dane (inglês)

The Old, The Good and Metal - Interview with Warrel Dane

By Marcos "Big Daddy" Garcia

The name of WARREL DANE doesn't need great presentations. He is the voice behind legendary bands as SANCTUARY, NERVERMORE and made participations on BEHEMOTH "The Apostasy" and HEVILAN's "The End of Time", and released a solo album on 2008, "Praises to the War Machine". And now, he is again touring solo on Brazil.

We had the opportunity to interview this legendary vocalist, and we talked about the past, present and the future with him, that was extremely kind with us.

BD: Hi Warrel. First of all, I'd like to thank you for this opportunity. And as the first question, I'd like to know how did you come to be interest on singing? And how did you found your particular style? It was before SERPENT'S KNIGHT's or on SANCTUARY? And what are your favorite vocalists, the ones that influenced you?

BD: About SERPENT'S KNIGHT times, what are your best remembrances from those days? And there's a strange feature I notice: on the only album, "Released from the Crypt", there's a version for JEFFERSON AIRPLANE's "White Rabbit", the same song that SANCTUARY played on "Refuge Denied". What is the reason for this fact? Do you still remember?

BD: Now coming to SACNTUARY old days. How the band was founded? And were the scene on Seattle back on those days? Yes, because you were on the same city that brought names as QUEENSRYCHE, METAL CURCH, THE MENTORS and many others, so it seems that the Metal scene was strong on the 80...

BD: On 1987, "Refuge Denied" came to the world, showing an excellent mix between traditional Heavy Metal with some aspects from Thrash Metal, something really different. How was the recording of the album? Was it a bit difficult to have Dave Mustaine dealing with the album's production? And what were the feelings about the first album? And did think you get the answer you thought SANCTUARY deserved back then?

BD: About the times of "Into the Mirror Black", your music became a bit heavier and even darker than we heard on "Refuge Denied". What were the reasons the led the band to take this way?

BD: It seems that Grunge Rock gave a shot on Metal scene of Seattle, because as soon as you were touring for "Into the Mirror Black", the whole things on music on U.S.A. changed. And SANCTUARY ended. But what were the reasons for this? Were things going nasty between you and the guys on that time?

BD: As soon as SANCTUARY went to its early grave, you started NEVERMORE, with a musical style slightly different from your previous work. Even your singing style had a change, to a more deeper and dramatic singing, and instead of only singing the songs, your interpretation improved a lot. So, what were the motivations for these changes on musical styles from NEVERMORE to SANCTUARY, and in your singing style?

BD: Another interesting feature that astonishes us is your guest appearances on albums from bands with very different styles. But your voice perfectly fits on BEHEMOTH's "Inner Sanctum", on HEVILAN and on " And Life Was Great..." from SHADED ENMITY. But the question is: do you like these different styles, from Death/Black Metal to traditional Heavy Metal and Melodic Death Metal?

BD:  Warrel, you've being playing on Brazil a lot for the last 2 or three years. It seems like you're in love with our country, isn't it? And how do you feel having Marcus Dotta (drums), Fabio Carito (bass), Tiago Oliveira (guitars) and Johnny Moraes (guitars) with you? I personally think you can have these guys on a future solo album...

BD: Then, as I spoke above about a new solo album, is there a chance for "Praises to the War Machine" have a successor?

BD: One more about SANCTUARY: I really loved "The Year the Sun Died", so, how the things went with it on press and on selling, now that illegal downloads are bankrupting the records labels? And how was the reception of it?

BD: I really was caught back on 1991 by your work due "Future Tense" video on Furia Metal TV show (a Brazilian version for MTV's Headbangers Ball). But when I saw the lyrics, I became astonished, because it shows things about the past, but one line is disturbing, saying "What do you think they will say when they look back on this, were the eighties just a time of spoiled innocence". Man, you're a kind of prophet! So the question is: do you remember the main idea about "Future Tense" lyrics?

BD: Warrel, I really thank you a lot for your kindness, and for this interview. So, please, leave your message for your fans.
